IDENTIFYING HYPERTHERMIA

Hyperthermia is caused by a rise in body temperature above what is considered normal
( 98.6*F or 37 C).  When temperatures rise to > 99*F, heat exhaustion or heat stroke may
result if left untreated.

Signs and symptoms of hyperthermia may include:
- severe headache, dizziness and mental confusion
- tachycardia, tachypnea and vasodilation
- seizures may occur in small children- red, flushed skin

Regardless of the cause, if hyperthermia is left untreated , the consequences can be fatal.
Quick action to correct the problem should always be a priority.
