WHAT IF YOU WERE THE NURSE

Updated 8/25

Dear nurses,

The nurse on the left arrived at work not feeling very well,
but did not want to "call in sick". Her charge nurse
(on the right)was not very fond of her, so she gave her
a very unreasonable assignment.

The nurse on the left, began to feel worse. She was
forced to seek emergency treatment and the charge
nurse had to take over her assignment.

There are two lessons to be learnt:
1)The nurse on the left should not have
gone to work if she was not feeling well .
2) The nurse on the right was given
" a taste of her own medicine."

CENTRAL CORD SYNDROME / BROWN SEQUARD SYNDROME

Updated 8/25

Scenario:The young lady in the image above,
fell off her horse. She sustained a spinal injury.
Spinal shock may be caused by hyperextension
or hyperflexion of the spinal column.Vasogenic
shock may also occur, leading to vasodilation
of the blood vessels, hypotension and bradycardia.

Central cord syndrome typically involves the central
part of the spinal cord. This unusual phenomenon
causes weakness of the upper extremities and minimal
or no weakness of the lower extremities.

Brown Sequard syndrome is a rare condition.
Penetrating wounds like stab wound to the back
or neck, a tumor which may obstruct blood flow,
to the spine, may cause this condition.

Hemisection of the spinal cord results in loss of
motor control on one side and loss of sensation
like temperature, on the other side.

HOME CARE NURSE SITUATION

This story begins above(Have you done Home Care Nursing ). It was the experience of a Home care nurse. Let us call her J. J was young, energetic and a very honest person. She really tried to do her best to make her patients happy. She was assigned to a Home care case of a woman in her 60s. This patient whom we will call Mrs.P had just returned from the hospital and had been previously treated with chemo, for lung cancer.
Mrs.P was assigned home care nurses around the clock. On this Saturday morning , J started her shift in Mrs.P's home. Shortly after her shift began, Mrs. P lit up a cigarette and began to smoke. THERE WAS OXYGEN RUNNING IN THE ROOM. J immediately asked her to stop and expressed the danger of smoking with oxygen. Suddenly , Mrs.P's husband walked in and stated he smelt smoke. Mrs. P said it was the nurse who was smoking.

J later shared with Mrs.P 's husband the real truth. She never informed her agency of the situation. On Monday, J received a call from her agency , stating she had mistreated Mrs.P and was not allowed back. She told her side of the story , but a little too late.
The Clinical Setting is packed with clinical issues. Enjoy reading and learning.
