What is an ERCP?

An ERCP ( Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)
is a procedure that is performed using a flexible tube, with a
light at the end. The tube is called an endoscope.

It is passed from the mouth to the duodenum. Contrast dye is
injected through the endoscope. This allows the doctor to
visualize the pancreatic ducts and the surrounding organs. 

The doctor will make a diagnosis based on findings.

What is Paralytic Ileus?

A paralytic ileus is a postoperative complication.
It may occur in any surgical patient and is caused
by anesthetics.

What are some of the symptoms of this condition?
Absent bowel sounds, abdominal pain and distention.

What is IBS? 

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a digestive disorder
that is diagnosed based on symptoms. It disrupts 
the normal pattern of the digestive system and is
sometimes brought on by stress related situations.

does have a great part in digestion.

Hydrochloric acid helps to maintain the acid

conditions necessary for the production of
digestive enzymes. It also works to get rid 
of bacteria which may cause harm in the 

stomach.

Dear nurses, 

At some point or another, a nurse may be put in

the position of taking care of a patient with an
order for NPO or NG tube insertion. 

When NPO (nothing by mouth) is ordered by
the doctor, the stomach is kept empty. An example
of this, is the patient who is scheduled for surgery,

or after trauma has occurred.

If a Nasogastric tube is ordered by the doctor, 

instructions are usually given, to put NG tube 
to suction, to remove excess gastric contents. 

It is important to monitor the color and quantity 
of stomach content. Bowel sounds or abdominal

distention should also be noted.

MATERNAL NURSING -ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE

Estrogen and Progesterone are two hormones produced
by the ovaries initially, then the placenta in the latter part
of pregnancy. They are first produced by the ovaries and
later the placenta. Estrogen and Progesterone also keep
the placenta healthy and enhances lactation.

The image above shows, Mrs.S who is about six months pregnant.
She is relaxing at home. Suddenly, she starts to have abdominal 

and back pain. She is also beginning to experience bleeding.

The placenta is a very vascular organ that develops in the

 uterus of a woman during pregnancy. It is attached to the 

fetus by the umbilical cord and provides nourishment and
oxygen to the growing fetus.

When the placenta suddenly becomes detached from the uterus,
either by trauma , or unknown cause, it is called placenta abruptio.
Heavy vaginal bleeding , abdominal cramping and signs and
symptoms of shock may be present.

Abruptio placenta requires emergency care. Placental separation 
occurs. C-section is usually done.
